How to Style a Graphic Hoodie for a British Winter
A graphic hoodie is the most worn piece in most British wardrobes from October to March. It is warm, easy and goes with almost anything. The trick with a hoodie that has a big print on the back, like our Arabic calligraphy hoodies, is to style it so the artwork still gets seen even when it is cold enough for a coat.
Here is how we wear ours, from rainy commutes to weekend plans.
1. Under an open overcoat
This is the easiest way to look put-together in a hoodie. Choose a wool or wool-blend overcoat in camel, grey or navy, wear it open, and pull the hood out over the collar. The hood frames your face and the coat makes the whole outfit look intentional.
- Black hoodie with a camel coat, dark jeans and white trainers.
- Burgundy hoodie with a charcoal or navy coat and black trousers.
- Beige or white hoodie with a brown or olive coat for a softer, earthy look.
Take the coat off indoors and the back print does the rest.
2. With a denim or utility jacket
A cropped denim jacket or a short utility jacket sits above the print line, so more of the artwork stays visible. A black Asil hoodie under a light-wash denim jacket is a classic combination, while a Tawabie hoodie works well under khaki or olive because those tones echo the colours of the stamps.
3. Layered for proper cold
On the coldest days, wear a plain long-sleeve tee or thermal underneath and a padded gilet over the top. The gilet keeps your core warm, leaves your arms free and keeps the back of the hood and the upper print on show. Add a beanie in a neutral colour so it does not compete with the design.
4. Colour pairings that always work
Our hoodies come in five colours, and each one has an easy formula:
- Black: goes with everything. Try grey or stone trousers to lift it.
- Burgundy: rich and wintry. Pair with black, charcoal, cream or denim.
- Baby blue: fresh in winter. Wear with white, cream, grey or light denim, and keep shoes clean and white.
- Beige: warm and calm. Pair with brown, olive, cream or dark denim.
- White: crisp and bright. Works with almost anything, especially black trousers.
5. Let the print be the only statement
A large back print is already the focus, so keep the rest of the outfit quiet: one colour on the bottom, plain shoes, minimal accessories. If the design is detailed, like Safar or Tawabie, avoid other patterns. If it is bold and simple, like Sahm or Jambiya, you can add a patterned scarf or a statement coat.
6. Getting the size right
Our hoodies follow standard unisex sizing from S to 3XL. If you like room for layering underneath, or you are between sizes, go one size up. Check the size guide on each product page for chest and length measurements in centimetres before you order.
7. Outfits for every kind of day
- The commute: black or burgundy hoodie, dark overcoat, straight jeans, leather trainers and a backpack. Warm on the platform, smart enough for the office on a dress-down day.
- Weekend errands: baby blue or white hoodie, light-wash jeans, white trainers and a cap. Easy and bright on a grey Saturday.
- Evening plans: black hoodie under a tailored wool coat, black trousers and clean leather boots. The back print turns heads when the coat comes off.
- Travelling: beige hoodie, relaxed trousers and comfortable trainers. Soft enough to sleep in on a long train, neat enough for arriving.
- Walks in the cold: any hoodie under a waterproof shell, with a beanie and scarf. Unzip the jacket at the café and the design is back on show.
8. Look after it so it lasts
Wash inside out on a cool cycle, skip the tumble dryer and dry flat or on a hanger. The print will stay sharp and the fleece will stay soft for many winters. Our care guide has the details.
FAQs
Can you wear a hoodie under a smart coat?
Yes. A hoodie under an open wool overcoat is one of the most popular smart-casual looks in the UK. Keep the trousers and shoes simple and pull the hood out over the collar.
What trousers go with a graphic hoodie?
Straight or relaxed dark jeans, black or grey chinos and tailored joggers all work. Avoid patterned trousers when the hoodie has a large print.
Will the print show if I wear a coat?
Wear the coat open or choose a cropped jacket, and the hood and upper print stay visible. Indoors, the full back print is on show.
Which hoodie colour is best for winter?
Black and burgundy are the classic winter colours, but beige and baby blue look fresh against dark winter coats.
